Flood Archive Continues to Grow
Twelve interviews have been added to the library's online digital archive, capturing experiences of the Rapid City Flood from the people who lived through it. These are memorable and courageous stories of rescue, rubble and rebuilding from those who witnessed Mother Nature at her most extreme.
Resulting in one of the deadliest floods in U.S. history, the storm of June 9, 1972 changed everything for many Rapid City citizens. 238 people perished and over three thousand were injured. Those we interviewed tell of the eerie green skies that preceded the storm, the growing ferocity of the rain and water, and the heroic efforts of rescuers to save whoever and whatever they could.
Do you have memories of the Rapid City Flood? We invite you to share your experiences. Go to the library website, www.rapidcitylibrary.org and click on 1972 Flood. From there you can access our flood archives and contribute your own flood stories and information. |
