Communities Thrive at the Rapid City Public Library

National Library Week, April 11-17, is an annual celebration of what libraries mean to their communities and their patrons. Libraries fill many needs for the community and the Rapid City Public Library is celebrating this through a full week of programs.

Celebrating the theme of “Communities Thrive at Your Library”, on Sunday April 11 from 1-3 pm, a Cultural Day will be held at RCPL-North with several community and cultural organizations invited to participate and share their culture including music, dance, food and more.  Then on Tuesday, April 13 Kristi Palmer from the National Guard will read stories during Family Story Time scheduled at  RCPL-Downtown in honor of April as Month of the Military Child. This year, Operation Military Kids is providing local community support for the children of SD National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. 

Wednesday, April 14 will feature a free Resume Webinar with Barbara Safani at the RCPL-Downtown. People can attend from 3-4 p.m. Safani will teach attendees how to write an effective resume that gets attention and interviews. This event is open to anyone and there is no pre-registration. Safini is the author of “Happy About My Resume: 50 Tips for Building a Better Document to Secure a Brighter Future.”

Thursday, April 15 will feature a book discussion of the novel chosen as the One Book South Dakota choice for 2010, “What is the What” by Dave Eggers. This event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the downtown library. This event is sponsored by the South Dakota Humanities Council and will be led by School of Mines professor, Kathy Antonen. Eggers book is the story of Valentino Achak Deng’s remarkable journey from war-torn East Africa to the United States. Valentino was one of the “Lost Boys” of Sudan, a group of young men who were left to wander through the jungles of East Africa because they were separated from their parents through bloodshed or chaos during the Sudanese civil war.

On Friday, April 16 a Poet’s Coffeehouse in conjunction with the 9th Annual High Plains Writers Poetry Competition will be held at 7 p.m. at the downtown library. Poets are invited to sign up to present their work. If you are a poet and want to enter, the contest the High Plains Writers contest offers $100 in cash and prizes. Deadline for submission is Monday, April 12. Winners will be announced at the coffeehouse.  One poem can be submitted per poet. The poem must be 50 lines or less in any style. Submissions can be sent to Jason Walker at the library or by e-mail jwalker@rcplib.org.

And finally on Saturday April 17, Dr. Kevin Weiland, author of “The Dakota Diet and the Return of the Buffalo,” will be in the library lobby from 1-3 p.m. He will have some healthy appetizers to give away from his book. Dr. Weiland is a practicing physician, board certified in the specialty of Internal Medicine.
